Best places to see the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are actually the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere with particles that are released from the sun’s atmosphere. They work in an 11-year cycle, and we’re currently in a phase of high activity after last year’s ‘solar maximum’.

Norway is a great location for viewing the Northern Lights, especially on the Norwegian island of Svalvard. This island is more or less in darkness from November through to January where they have no day light hours. With little pollution from cars and factories, the views from this Norwegian island can be spectacular.

Another place to view the Lights from is Kakslauttanen, Finland. This Finnish resort offers the opportunity to be able to view the Northern Lights from the comfort of your own glass roofed Igloo.

These beautiful locations are great for seeing the Northern Lights but also offer a wealth of other activities and sights to see.
